
Finding small holes in wooden beams, floorboards, roof timbers or furniture can immediately raise concerns about woodworm. However, the presence of holes does not necessarily mean that insects are still active inside the timber.
Old woodworm damage may remain visible for many years after an infestation has ended. Before any treatment is recommended, it is important to establish whether the infestation is active, historic or caused by something else entirely.

What Is Woodworm?
Woodworm is the general term used to describe damage caused by the larvae of wood-boring beetles. Adult beetles lay their eggs in cracks, joints or existing holes in timber. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed within the wood before eventually emerging as adult beetles.
The small round or oval holes commonly associated with woodworm are usually exit holes. They are created when the adult beetle leaves the timber, rather than when it first enters it.
Several species of wood-boring beetle can affect UK properties, and the appearance of the holes, bore dust and timber damage may vary depending on the species involved.

Does Finding Woodworm Holes Mean the Infestation Is Active?
No. Finding holes in timber does not, by itself, confirm an active woodworm infestation.
Exit holes can remain visible long after the beetles have left. Timber may have been treated by a previous owner, or environmental conditions may have changed so that the wood is no longer suitable for the insects.
Applying treatment simply because holes are present can therefore be unnecessary. A proper assessment should consider the condition of the holes, the presence of fresh bore dust, the moisture content of the timber and any evidence of recent beetle activity.
What Are the Main Signs of Active Woodworm?
1. Fresh Bore Dust Around or Below the Timber
One of the clearest signs of active woodworm is fresh bore dust, sometimes called frass. This may collect underneath affected beams, on floorboards, around joists or close to exit holes.
Fresh bore dust is normally light in colour and may have a clean, powdery or gritty appearance. Older dust is more likely to be dark, dirty or mixed with general household debris.
However, bore dust can sometimes be dislodged from old holes by vibration, building work or movement. Its presence should be assessed alongside other signs before concluding that an infestation is active.
2. New, Clean-Edged Exit Holes
Recently formed exit holes often appear lighter and cleaner around their edges because the newly exposed timber has not yet darkened or collected dust.
Older woodworm holes may have darker edges, dirt inside them or a worn appearance. Paint, varnish or staining across the holes may also indicate that they were present before the surface was last decorated.
The size and shape of the holes can help a surveyor identify the likely beetle species, although this should not be used as the only method of diagnosis.
3. Live Adult Beetles
Adult beetles may sometimes be found on windowsills, floors or close to affected timber during their emergence season. Many wood-boring beetles emerge during the warmer months, although timings vary by species and environmental conditions.
Finding a beetle close to damaged timber can provide useful evidence, but it is important to identify it correctly. Not every small beetle found inside a property is responsible for timber damage.
4. Larvae Within the Timber
Woodworm larvae live inside the timber and are therefore rarely visible without opening or examining the affected area. They are generally pale in colour and may have a curved or creamy-white appearance.
Because unnecessary opening-up can cause further damage, this type of investigation is best carried out by an experienced timber specialist where appropriate.
5. Bore Dust That Returns After Cleaning
If you find possible bore dust, carefully clean the area and monitor it. Dust that reappears beneath the same section of timber may indicate continuing activity.
You can also place clean paper beneath an affected beam or joist to make new deposits easier to see. Avoid blocking or filling the existing holes, as this could make a later professional inspection more difficult.
6. Fresh Damage to the Timber
Active infestations can gradually weaken timber as larvae create tunnels beneath the surface. In more advanced cases, the wood may become crumbly, fragile or easily damaged.
Damaged timber alone does not confirm current activity because the deterioration may have happened many years earlier. The extent of the damage should nevertheless be assessed, particularly where structural timbers, roof members or floor joists are affected.
Can Damp Increase the Risk of Woodworm?
Some wood-boring insects are more likely to affect timber with an elevated moisture content. Leaking roofs, defective gutters, poor subfloor ventilation, plumbing leaks and persistent condensation can all create conditions that make timber more vulnerable.
This is why a professional woodworm assessment should not concentrate only on killing insects. It should also identify any moisture source or building defect that may have contributed to the problem.
Without addressing the underlying conditions, timber can remain at risk of further insect attack or fungal decay such as wet rot.
How Can You Check Whether Woodworm Is Active?
There are several simple steps property owners can take before arranging an inspection:
- Photograph the affected timber and holes so that you can monitor any changes.
- Carefully remove existing dust from beneath the area.
- Place clean paper below the timber to catch any new bore dust.
- Look for newly formed holes with pale, sharp edges.
- Check windowsills and nearby surfaces for adult beetles.
- Note any dampness, leaks or ventilation problems close to the affected timber.
- Avoid applying DIY chemicals before the timber has been correctly assessed.
These checks may provide useful information, but they cannot always confirm the species, extent or age of an infestation.
Should All Woodworm Be Treated?
Woodworm treatment should only be recommended where there is sufficient evidence that it is necessary.
If the infestation is historic and the timber remains structurally sound, chemical treatment may not be required. Where activity is confirmed, the appropriate response will depend on the beetle species, the extent of the infestation, the condition of the timber and the cause of any excess moisture.
Treatment may include the application of a suitable insecticidal product, improvements to ventilation, repair of leaks, removal of badly damaged timber or specialist structural repairs.
