Historic buildings often require a very careful balance between modern structural repair and traditional conservation. When movement occurs within a listed building, the solution must do more than simply stabilise the structure. It must also protect the historic fabric, respect the original materials and preserve the appearance of the property for the future.
Shield Preservation recently completed a specialist structural repair project at St Bartholomew’s Church in Kent, a beautiful Grade I listed church requiring sensitive masonry reinforcement.
The project involved strengthening the gable end of the church following movement within the wall structure. Due to the age, significance and construction of the building, the repair needed to be carefully designed and sympathetically carried out.
The Cause of the Structural Movement
The issue followed an extension that had previously been added to the historic building. A design problem meant there was insufficient structural support at the gable end, where an additional timber truss should have been incorporated.
Over time, this lack of support led to movement and spreading within the wall structure. In a building of this age and importance, even relatively localised movement must be taken seriously, as it can worsen if left untreated and may affect surrounding masonry, finishes and internal fabric.
Before any repairs could be carried out, the structure needed to be assessed carefully to ensure the most appropriate repair method was selected.
Using Helifix for Structural Masonry Repairs
To stabilise the affected area, our team installed a carefully designed Helifix repair system. Helifix systems are commonly used in structural masonry repair because they allow walls to be strengthened with minimal disruption to the existing building.
For this project, the system was used to reinforce both the internal and external masonry, helping to prevent further movement while retaining as much of the original structure as possible.
This type of repair is particularly well suited to heritage buildings because it can be installed discreetly and does not usually require large-scale rebuilding. The aim is to strengthen the structure while preserving the character and historic value of the property.
Sympathetic Repairs for a Listed Building
When working on a Grade I listed church, appearance and material compatibility are just as important as structural performance.
Externally, the wall was finished using traditional lime render, which will be expertly matched to maintain the church’s original appearance. Lime-based materials are often essential on older buildings because they allow the structure to breathe and work more sympathetically with traditional masonry.
Internally, the structural repairs have been completed and the surface is now ready for filling and decoration at a later stage.
Every stage of the work required care, precision and respect for the building’s historic fabric. The finished repair needed to provide long-term stability without compromising the character of the church.
Protecting Historic Buildings for the Future
Projects like this demonstrate the importance of combining modern structural repair techniques with traditional conservation methods. Historic buildings can develop structural problems for many reasons, including poor previous alterations, age-related movement, moisture, settlement or design issues in later extensions.
The right repair approach can stabilise the building, reduce the risk of further damage and help preserve important historic structures for future generations.
At Shield Preservation, we have experience working on sensitive and specialist projects where technical expertise, attention to detail and sympathetic repair methods are essential.
