It is always satisfying to see a construction project finally begin to take shape, particularly when much of the early work has involved drawings, specifications and visualisations.
Shield Waterproofing & Preservation is currently involved in a new-build development in East Sussex, where four houses are being constructed in conjunction with a substantial retaining wall.
As the structure has emerged from the ground, the quality of the concrete work has become clear – providing an excellent foundation for the waterproofing system being installed.
Waterproofing a Retaining Wall Structure
Retaining walls and below-ground structures require careful structural waterproofing design because they can be subjected to significant ground moisture and water pressure throughout the life of the building.
For this development, a waterproofing solution using Newton Waterproofing Systems has been incorporated into the construction.
The cavity drain membrane system is being taken to the rear retaining wall, with natural drainage directed towards the client’s soakaways.
The concrete slab is also being protected using a waterproofing membrane that is carefully sealed into the vertical waterproofing system on the rear wall.
This creates continuity between the horizontal and vertical waterproofing elements and helps protect the structure against potential water ingress.
Keeping the Waterproofing Design Simple and Effective
A successful waterproofing system does not necessarily need to be unnecessarily complicated. Where site conditions allow, the objective is to create a system that is:
- appropriate for the structure and expected water conditions
- straightforward to maintain
- properly integrated into the building design
- installed using compatible waterproofing components
- provided with an effective method of drainage
On this project, natural drainage is being incorporated into the design, allowing water collected by the system to be directed towards the property’s soakaways.
Careful consideration of drainage routes is an important part of waterproofing design, particularly on sites where retaining walls form part of the main structure.
Waterproofing New-Build Properties
Waterproofing should ideally be considered at the earliest possible stage of a construction project.
Designing the waterproofing system alongside the structural elements allows details such as membrane interfaces, drainage routes, joints and penetrations to be properly considered before construction progresses.
This can help reduce the risk of difficult remedial work being required later.
Shield Waterproofing & Preservation works with contractors, developers, architects and property owners to design and install waterproofing solutions for a wide variety of structures, including:
- new-build developments
- basements and below-ground rooms
- retaining walls
- commercial buildings
- residential properties
- refurbishment projects
Our experienced waterproofing teams work with established waterproofing manufacturers and systems to provide solutions appropriate to the individual project.
Quality Construction Makes a Difference
One of the most noticeable aspects of this East Sussex development has been the standard of the concrete construction.
Once the waterproofing and subsequent stages of the development are completed, much of this work will no longer be visible – which almost seems a shame when the concrete looks this good.
Nevertheless, it is the quality of the work that eventually becomes hidden beneath the finished building that can be particularly important to its long-term performance.
We are looking forward to seeing the four properties continue to take shape as the development progresses.
