When an existing waterproofing system fails, simply applying another waterproofing product over the top is rarely the right solution.
Shield Waterproofing & Preservation was recently called in to resolve a challenging structural waterproofing failure at a high-value property in rural East Sussex.
Investigating the Existing Waterproofing Failure
Before any new waterproofing system could be installed, the existing system needed to be carefully stripped back.
Removing the failed waterproofing allowed our team to properly inspect the underlying substrate, identify any areas requiring attention and prepare the surface correctly for the new installation.
This stage is particularly important. Even a high-quality waterproofing product can fail if the substrate has not been adequately prepared or if the system is applied incorrectly.
Installation of a New PolyMaxx Waterproofing System
Once the area had been fully assessed and prepared, our experienced waterproofing team installed a new PolyMaxx waterproofing system.
Correct installation involves much more than simply applying the waterproofing material. Particular attention needs to be given to preparation, detailing, joints, changes in level and other potentially vulnerable areas.
Following the manufacturer’s requirements and ensuring consistent application throughout the installation helps minimise the risk of future water ingress.
Independent Spark Testing
Once the waterproofing works were complete, the new system was independently spark tested.
Spark testing is used to identify pinholes, punctures or other defects within certain waterproofing membranes that may not be visible during a normal visual inspection.
The testing confirmed that the newly installed waterproofing system was free from defects, giving both the client and project team additional confidence in the completed installation.
10-Year Waterproofing Guarantee
A 10-year guarantee will also be provided for the completed waterproofing works, offering the property owners additional long-term reassurance.
For a high-value property, ensuring that waterproofing work has been correctly specified, professionally installed and thoroughly checked is particularly important.
Waterproofing Requires More Than the Right Product
This project demonstrates why waterproofing should always be undertaken by suitably trained, competent and experienced waterproofing contractors.
Choosing the correct waterproofing product is important, but it is only part of the process.
Successful waterproofing also depends on:
- Correct investigation of the original problem
- Thorough substrate preparation
- Appropriate waterproofing system selection
- Careful application and detailing
- Experienced installation
- Effective quality-control procedures
- Testing of the completed system where appropriate
Cutting corners at any of these stages can result in water ingress, damage to finishes and potentially expensive remedial work later.
