What Is Cellar Tanking?
Cellar tanking is a form of waterproofing that usually involves applying a waterproof barrier to walls and floors. The aim is to hold back moisture and prevent it from passing through into the internal space.
This may involve cementitious coatings, waterproof renders, membranes, or other specialist waterproofing products depending on the property and the level of water ingress. In simple terms, tanking is designed to resist water pressure from outside the structure.
The challenge is that cellars and basements are below ground. This means the walls and floors are often exposed to moisture from the surrounding ground. In some cases, they may also be affected by hydrostatic pressure, where water builds up outside the structure and pushes against the walls or floor.

Why Does Cellar Tanking Fail?

Drainage Was Not Considered
Waterproofing and drainage are closely linked. If water is constantly collecting around the outside of a cellar, the pressure on the structure can increase.
External drainage, ground levels, rainwater goods, surface water, gullies and surrounding ground conditions can all affect how much moisture reaches the cellar walls. If these issues are ignored, the waterproofing system may be placed under unnecessary pressure.
